Crested Saguaros in and around the Wild Burro Trail System Menu

The information that follows currently identifies 43 Crested Saguaros in and around the Wild Burro Trail System.  The record cold freeze in February 2011 resulted in some severe damage to Saguaro’s located at the higher elevations and to Crested Saguaro’s in general.  As a result 12 of these Crested Saguaros(27%) have either died or have significant damage as a result of the hard freeze.  The following three tools will help you locate Crested Saguaros in and around our Trail System.

Wild Burro Canyon Crested Saguaros Trail Map

This TOPO Map is similar to other Wild Burro Trail Maps on the DM Hiker Web Site, except information not directly related to the Trails and Crested Saguaros has been removed.  In addition, the Maps area has been expanded to include Crested Saguaros not directly in Wild Burro Canyon .

-           The Crested Saguaros that appear in red, as “Cxx” where “xx” identifies the specific Crested Saguaro.

-           The Crested Saguaros that appear in purple, as “Cxx” where “xx” identifies the specific Crested Saguaro, that are either dead or dying.  There may be some remains of the Crested Saguaro skeleton still standing or laying on the ground.

-           If a DM Hiker pointed a new Crested Saguaro out to me, I named the Crested Saguaro after that person such as C06 Tom, C10 Dan, C24 Barb, C30 Paul, C31 Jen, C36 Steve and C41 Joe’s Crest.

-           If a Crested Saguaro is significantly off the trail, but can be seen from the trail, occasionally view points appear on the Map (example, View C29).

Suggested Hikes in and around the Wild Burro Trail System

Currently this document contains sixteen hikes on Wild Burro Canyon Trails, four Bushwhack Hikes and a hike in the Tortolita Preserve. The Bushwhack Hikes where specifically added to the list of “Suggested Hikes” because they took us to areas where Crested Saguaros could only be seen if you were hiking off trail.  The “Suggested Hikes” document also appears on the main DM Hiker Menu.

Practically every hike in Wild Burro Canyon requires you to hike multiple trails.  This document combines multiple trails into one hike and lists the total, mileage and elevation gained on the hike along with miles and elevation per trail segment.  It also lists all the Crested Saguaros that, if you are observant, you will see on the hike.  It identifies the specific Crested Saguaro (C09) and what trail it is located off of (Wild Mustang).

This document has been available on the DM Hiker Web Site for a few years.  As of March 2011, “Suggested Hikes in and around the Wild Burro Trail System” is being enhanced to include a link for each Hike to a Picasa Picture Slide Show.  One or more picture(s) of each Crested Saguaro will be displayed.  Click on the link and a Crested Saguaro slide show will be presented.  The Crested Saguaro ID will be on the picture, along with a comment to help you locate it (C22 Goat Coral Trail - .1 miles up slope north of Trail).

Pictures of Crested Saguaros in and around the Wild Burro Trail System

This document has also been available on the DM Hiker Web Site for a few years.  As of March 2012, it was update to include pictures of 43 Crested Saguaros in and around the Wild Burro trail System and 3 in surrounding neighborhoods.  They are presented in the following two sequences.

    Crested Saguaro Identification number (C22)

     Trail Name (Goat Corral Trail)

Click on the Crested Saguaro ID# and a picture of the Crested will be displayed.

Crested Saguaro Notes

I will not give out GPS Way Points for Crested Saguaros that can be seen along Hiking Trails.

If a hiker uses the Wild Burro Crested Saguaro Trail Map and the descriptions below the pictures on the DMHikers Picasa Site, a hiker should be able to locate the Crested Saguaro.

I will not give out GPS Wapoints for Crested Saguaros that are on private land.

I will give out GPS waypoints for Crested Saguaros that are not located adjacent to formal hiking trails.  These are Crested Saguaro’s, that cannot be seen from a hiking trail and will require bushwhacking
