Sabino
Canyon
Under a Full Moon
Hike
Leader: Joel Tormoen 579-7513
Level C: 7-8 miles, 500+ ft.
[email protected]
Depart:
6:45 p.m.
 Return: ??
Some
of us did this one last Spring, but not when the moon was
full. This is quite an easy walk up the canyon and back --- we
dont even have to go all the way.
If the
majority rules, we might stop for gelato on the way home. All
you would need would be a jacket, a flashlight just in case
it was cloudy, and water.
Currently
there is a fundraising effort underway (SAVE OUR SABINO) to
support the rebuilding of the roadway so the trams --- and
maybe new, non-diesel trams --- would again be able to take
folks to the end of the paved road, as well as repair the
trails in the canyon that were washed out by the monsoons. The
Dove Mountain Hiking Club has made a donation to support this
effort, and you are invited to add to that effort if you wish.
Just look for the announcements in the newspaper for the banks
supporting the fundraiser, or go to www.sabinocanyon.org.
Carpool fee: $2.00

Depart

Est. Return after
6:00pm
This
is a hike from
Madera
Canyon
to
the highest peak in the
Santa
Rita
Mountains
.
The trailhead elevation is 5400 feet.
Mount
Wrightson
is
9495 feet. We will
hike up the Old Baldy Trail to Josephine Saddle (2.15
miles/elevation gain 1705 feet).
We will continue up the Baldy Trail to Baldy Saddle
(total miles 3.95/elevation 3600 feet).
At this point each hiker will have a choice of either
staying at Baldy Saddle and waiting for the rest of us to
return, or hiking to the peak.
Those going to the peak, have an additional .9 miles
and 495 feet of trekking to reach the summit.
From the Trailhead it is 4.85 miles to the peak with an
elevation gain of 4095 feet.
This is the highest point in southern
Arizona
and
the views are spectacular.
On
the return trip, we will be taking the Supper Trail down from
Baldy Saddle to Josephine Saddle.
This trail is 3.3 miles down to Josephine Saddle, which
is 1.5 miles longer that the route up the Baldy Trail.
We will be hiking on the east side of the mountain,
which was devastated by the 2005 Floridia Fire.
If you have
never hiked through an area that has been through a major
fire, you will find this very interesting.
We will take the Baldy Trail down from Josephine Saddle
to the Trailhead
This
hike will be at a moderate pace.
This is a difficult hike, so bring plenty of water,
lunch and snacks. Carpool fee: $4.00
